On May 15, 2017, our correspondent in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, Javier Valdez, 50, a drug cartel specialist, was shot to death in front of the offices of his paper Rio Doce. Global News Director Michèle Léridon praised his "extreme courage" and urged the Mexican authorities to "shed light on this cowardly assassination."
Traumatic coverage: AFP offers around-the-clock psychological support
Thanks to an agreement with Eutelmed, a company
specialising in psychological counselling, AFP can offer
personalised psychological support 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, to any of its staff involved in potentially
traumatic coverage. This support is provided in around
20 languages.

Tie-up between AFP and the Maison des Journalistes
On May 3, World Press Freedom Day, AFP announced a tie-up with the Maison des Journalistes (MDJ). The Agency committed to sponsoring a room at the MDJ to house a refugee or asylum-seeking journalist, as well as to help them integrate socially and professionally.
Data journalism: AFP, ANSA and DPA create the European Data News Hub
AFP, ANSA and DPA have joined forces to create the
European Data News Hub (EDNH), a data journalism website
offering free content. Open to all, this interactive platform
offers reliable and varied content on the big topics sparking
debate in the European Union.
Kate Webb honoured with an Australian stamp
Kate Webb, AFP correspondent and legendary journalist
in Asia, where she covered some of the most troubling
and historic events, appears on an Australian stamp that
came out on October 6, 2017. She features alongside
Rosemary Griggs from the Red Cross.
Rana Moussaoui features in special edition of Live Magazine
On May 3, 2017, World Press Freedom Day,
AFP took part in a special edition of the Live Magazine show
at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. Rana Moussaoui,
from the Beirut bureau, offered her account of the fall
of Aleppo, the coverage of which won the Agency awards
at major journalism festivals.
Debates on current affairs in the Arab world at the Arab World Institute in Paris
On February 22, 2017, the Arab World Institute in Paris
launched a regular debate on current affairs in partnership
with AFP, the Collège de France, France Culture and France
Médias Monde. This monthly analysis and debate show
begins with a slideshow produced by AFP about the topic
chosen. The partnership will be extended in 2018.
New Year in images in Paris airports
AFP and Paris airports (the ADP group) teamed up for
the New Year celebrations to show images from New Year
parties around the world. From December 8, 2017 to
January 12, 2018, a slideshow of AFP photos was beamed
onto around 60 screens at the two main Paris airports,
Orly and Charles-de-Gaulle.
AFP wins the 'rebuilding and fairness' award for social dialogue
"Rebuilding and fairness": AFP won this award, which recognises firms that have introduced innovative social dialogue initiatives, after signing its company-wide agreement. It was presented on October 12 to Philippe Le Blon, Human Resources Director.
AFP published its code of ethics in Chinese, in collaboration
with the University of Hong Kong’s Journalism and Media
Studies Centre. Also available in French, English, Spanish
and Arabic, the code sets out the Agency's guiding editorial
principles and ethical standards.
Bayeux-Calvados prize: The sharp eye of Syrian photographers on the war
An exhibition in the museum that houses the Bayeux tapestry shows 40 photos from the Syrian conflict taken between 2013 and 2017. The poignant images of AFP's Syrian photographers offered visitors an unvarnished view of the conflict.
On November 9, as part of its integration programme, the HR management organised an event for work-study students from the administrative and technical departments. They were invited to take part in an escape game and later socialised with their tutors.
AFP and the Eduthèque platform
Since March 2017, AFP has been contributing to
the Eduthèque platform, which makes educational,
cultural and scientific resources available free of charge
to 1st and 2nd grade pupils and teachers. Divided into
three topics – art and literature, science and technology,
social and human sciences – there is a wealth of archives,
videographics, videos and graphics.
AFP unveils the exhibition "Odiseas Humanas" in Mexico
From September 8 to October 8, 2017, AFP presented
"Odiseas Humanas" as part of the international fair at
the University of Monterey which chose France as guest
of honour for this 7th edition.
AFP, a public success during Press Week
AFP is a long-term partner of Press and Media Week
organised by the CLEMI (Centre for Education in Media and
Information) and in March offered its text, photo, video,
graphics and videographics content to more than 200,000
teachers. AFP's content was a big success in 2017,
with a 40-percent gain compared to 2016.
The AFP Bourse turns 10
For 10 years, the AFP Bourse has selected the best talents
from journalism school and young professionals.
The top performer in each category wins a 6-month contract
with AFP and those who win the jury's special prize get
a 3-month contract.
The European migrant crisis as seen by AFP exhibited at Bozar
On May 3, 2017, the Global News Director unveiled the exhibition "Putting a face on the invisibles" in Brussels, a selection of AFP photos about the migrant crisis. "One talks about the 'topic' of migrants or the migrant 'problem' or the migrant 'crisis' ... but we often forget the men and women behind the figures."
AFP takes pride of place at the 8th Zoom Photo Festival in Canada
At the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Regional Museum in
Canada, AFP presented a look back at the news in 2017,
with an exhibition of 35 prints and a slide show of nearly
250 photos.
As part of its 'quality of life at work' week,
from October 9 to 13, AFP and its works committee put on
a honey tasting for staff. Nature was bountiful and staff
were able to leave with a pot of honey each.
